Lover is a meditation on the power of sex, violence, and zealotry. The film explores what happens when the weight of sexual obsession bears down on a well-meaning religious leader. The story is set in an unnamed urban city in the summer of 1977. There have been a slew of controversial fatal shootings involving city police, and young Pastor Warrenthall Mitchell is seizing the moment. A bright disciple of the late Dr Martin Luther King Jr., Pastor Mitchell has inspired an entire community to hold a demonstration for non-violence. But Pastor Mitchell is risking everything with a secret carnal addiction to an unwieldy, dog-loving nymph named Nina. Nina conjures the wild in the Pastor, which is promptly followed by the excruciating sting of self-loathing. The Pastor shares knowledge of his indiscretions with his former protégé, Mike, who is now somewhat dimwitted, having been scarred by a tour of Vietnam. Mike holds the Pastor's secret safe. Still, Pastor Mitchell resolves to end his affair with Nina for the sake of his new political movement, his family, and his own spiritual health. But on the eve of the great march, as Mike drives him away from his mistress' apartment, Pastor Mitchell has a deeply troubled mind. Something has gone horribly wrong. It has to do with the butcher knife that he is concealing in his suit jacket.
